Meeting of Dakar on Caritas : Church for a charity organization

The second conference on Caritas opened in Dakar on this monday 18 september 2017. The various speakers at the opening ceremony recalled the importance of charity to the active hand of the Church. About 168 delegations took part in opening of the meeting.

Five years after the meeting in Kinshasa, the Bishops of Africa have gathered in Dakar since this Monday, the 18th of September 2017. Addressing the theme: “Organizing the service of charity in Africa, the role of bishops”, different speakers who took the floor at the opening of the meeting praised the importance of charity in the life of the church.

The President of Caritas Senegal and Bishop of Kolda,  Jean Pierre Basséne, said he was honored and pleased to receive his guests in Senegal to talk about charity, which is an important part of the life of the Church. The meeting in Dakar is seen as a second step in the organization of help after the conference of Kinshasa which was held in 2012. Then, the Archbishop of Dakar, Monsignor Benjamin Ndiaye, recalled the role of the church in supporting poor people. Therefore, he said, the different dioceses of his country Senegal, strive to do charity actions even though financial means are not enough often. They focus in the rural areas where people are not very rich.  This does not prevent the church too, from being at the bedside of the poor people who live in cities.

The apostolic nuncio in Senegal, Michael Banach, delivering the message of the head of the church stressed that charity is a dimension to which the church can’t renounce. For him, charity is the only force that unites peoples and strengthens their bond with God in this world marked by human atrocities. The Apostolic Nuncio calls for unity and reflection for an African charity.

The vice president of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar Mathieu Madega finds that charity is the only condition  to be part of the kingdom of heaven.  He finds in the sense that charity is an urgency that challenges and presses the Church.

The President of Caritas Africa, Gabriel Arokye said that the commitment of the Bishops has always been determined in Africa and Madagascar.

The General Secretary of Caritas Internationalis Michel Ray believes that it is necessary to unite so that the Church can better play its role. We must also work to restore the poorest to the center.

The Prefect of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development, His Eminence Peter Kodwo Appiah Cardinal Turkson said that we must reverse the trend that Africa is a continent subject to the exploitation of wealthy countries.

Six Caritas of the world such as Asia and Europe took part in this meeting in Dakar, whose opening ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Armed Forces Augustin Tine, representing the head of state of Macky Sall.
